The Past Must Serve the Future

A shipment of history arrived today
We unpacked it and split the parts
Building material for a better past

The economics of history runs to ruins
Rich civilizations reduced to small change
Our algorithms track it back

In our new tellings the vanquished turn victors
Steal the arches of the conquerors
The dead crawl atop battlefields
Reach brilliant surgeons and live again
We write their new legends

Who prefers facts? They’re messy, uncertain
Our myths transform muddles to miracles
We break up the past
Make it art

More history arrives each day
What happened yesterday just what we say
What occurs tomorrow remains inevitable

Life marches to the rhythms of time
We write the lines;
Every real intelligence knows
The past must serve the future
